Dutch Bike School Helps With Cultural Integration
[5 April 2000]   Ernst Poulsen

The Dutch city of Tilburg has recognized that integration of immigrants has more to it than learning a language and getting a break in the job-market. In the Netherlands riding a bicycle is as important as anything else if one wants to "feel" Dutch.

For four years the city has actively supported a local bike school which teaches immigrant women to ride a bicycle. The programme was initiated privately back in 1980.

Six courses are offered every year in Tilburg - each with 9 cyclists. However, there's presently a waiting list of around 50 women.

According to Angela van der Kloof who runs the programme, similar projects exist in several places in the Netherlands: "Mothers who do not cycle will not teach their children to use the bike either", she says to the ECF-magazine "The European Cyclist."

For those interested in setting up similar courses Angela van der Kloof has developed a teaching package which may be bought for 10 Euro, and presently she is trying to raise funds to make a video instruction tape.
