Images from Amsterdam - City of Bicycles [16 July 2000] miles poindexter ![]() Amsterdam may be one of the most bicycle friendly cities in the world. These pictures document the bicycle facilities in this old Dutch city. Bicycles are everywhere. And so are bike lanes, bike lights, and bike racks.
The bicycle facilites don't stop at the city borders either, but continue on throughout the country, connecting all the major cities with wonderful bicycle lanes, many of which follow safe, quiet bike lanes apart from the roads and the loud, obnoxious vehicles on them.
Also included in this photograph collection is a shot of two rollerblades I found in a bicycle shop. I didn't actually see anyone riding these. The few inline skaters I saw were using normal looking skates. ![]()
The 2nd picture of this essay is from Gent, Belgium. There are quite a few bicyclists in this scenic city, and a huge section of the "old city" is completely closed to automobiles. But the bikelane facilities are not nearly as good as Amsterdam.
